About the SVG star shape
The star is one of the oldest and most universal symbols in human design. Five-pointed stars appear on the flags of more than 50 countries, in religious iconography across cultures, and in essentially every rating and favoriting interface ever shipped. Six-pointed stars carry religious weight (Star of David, hexagram), eight-pointed appears in Islamic art, and 12-pointed in compasses and sunbursts.
In digital design the star has become almost too universal — every product uses the same emoji ★ for ratings, every kids' brand uses a yellow 5-pointer. A custom star is one of the easiest ways to add distinct personality to brand assets that would otherwise look generic.
Mathematically, a star is just 2N vertices arranged in alternating outer / inner concentric rings. Vary the ring radii to make sharp daggers or chubby chunks. Add tangent handles to round the tips. Twist the inner ring relative to the outer to create a swirling pinwheel effect.
Using SVG stars in your projects
For web: inline SVG can be styled with CSS — animate fills on hover for review interfaces, scale on click for "favorite" interactions, or apply filter effects for premium feel.
For app icons and brand marks: copy the SVG into Figma or your design tool of choice — it imports as an editable vector you can refine, layer, and combine with text or other elements.
For raster contexts (social media graphics, print): download PNG (transparent) or JPG (white background). 1024×1024 is enough for most uses; 2048+ for high-DPI print.
Tips for great star graphics
Inner radius around 0.38 produces the "Disney logo" star look — recognisable and balanced. Below 0.3 starts to feel sharp / aggressive; above 0.55 starts to feel like a polygon.
For ratings UI: use a slightly smaller inner radius (0.35) than the default. Sharp stars read as more "premium" than chunky ones.
For kids / playful brands: round the tips (tip roundness 0.2–0.4) and use bright colors. Round tips read as friendly, sharp tips read as serious.
For vintage / retro: many points (8–12) and a small twist (5–10°) creates a sunburst look. Pair with warm gradient (orange→red) for that classic 70s feel.
What You Can Create
Logos and brand marks
A custom-tuned star is more memorable than the standard ★ emoji or stock icon library.
Reviews and ratings
Custom rating star icons that match your brand colors instead of generic yellow stars.
Achievement / badge graphics
Sheriff-style stars for awards, gamification, and certificate seals.
Decorative accents
Sparkles and twinkles in landing pages, holiday graphics, and "magic" / kids' branding.
Flags and patriotic graphics
Custom star configurations for flag designs, political campaigns, and patriotic events.
Sunburst / radial backgrounds
High point counts (10–12) make great sunburst patterns for retro / vintage designs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many points should my star have?
5 is the universal default — used in flags of dozens of countries, sheriff badges, and almost every "favorite" icon. 6 reads as decorative or religious (Star of David). 4 is a sparkle. 8+ reads as a sunburst or compass. Pick based on the symbolic weight you want.
What does the inner radius slider do?
It controls the depth of the valleys between points. Small inner radius (0.2) makes spiky daggered points. Large inner radius (0.7+) makes a chunkier, almost-polygon shape. The default 0.4 is a balanced "classic star" look.
Can I make a Star of David?
Set points to 6 and inner radius to ~0.5 for a balanced 6-pointed star. For the classic two-overlapping-triangles look you'd need to render two triangles separately — not currently supported in this tool but planned.
Is the star SVG free for commercial use?
Yes. Stars you generate are yours to use however you like — products, branding, social media, print, merchandise. No license fee, no attribution.
What sizes can I export?
SVG is resolution-independent. PNG and JPG export at 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096 pixels.
