Can I edit the steps on the diagram itself?

Yes. Each step carries an owner and a status, which is what turns a diagram into something a team can actually run — a process with no named owner per step tends not to happen.
What is a swimlane diagram for?
Showing hand-offs. Each team gets a lane and the steps sit in the lane that owns them, so the points where work crosses between teams — usually where it stalls — become visible.
How many steps should a process diagram have?
Five to nine. Beyond that, group related steps into phases or split into sub-processes; a diagram nobody can hold in their head does not get followed.
Can I use this for an SOP?
Yes — the Vertical SOP layout is built for it, with room for the detail each step needs rather than the short labels a flowchart uses.
How is this different from a flowchart?
A process diagram shows a sequence of steps with owners and status. A flowchart shows branching logic with decision diamonds. If your process has "if this, then that", use the flowchart maker.
