Start with the school: its name, address and a logo. This maker draws a round crest with the school's initials in place of a logo, so a card never looks unfinished. Then the student block: name, grade or class, term and teacher. Keep the labels your school uses; each one is editable, so "Grade / class" can become "Homeroom" or "Roll no."

Next, the subjects. List every subject with its score, and add a remark that says something specific ("Reads fluently and loves chapter books" tells a parent more than "Good"). Decide whether scores are percentages or marks out of a total, then set the grading scale so the grades match your school's policy. The overall average and grade are worked out for you.

Finish with attendance, the overall result (such as Promoted to Grade 5), a comment from the class teacher and, if your school uses one, from the principal, and leave signature lines for the teacher, the principal and a parent or guardian.

Most middle and high schools grade percentages with letters: A for 90 and above, B for 80 to 89, C for 70 to 79, D for 60 to 69 and F below that. Some add plus and minus grades; add them as extra lines (A-, 90 and A, 93) and the maker sorts them.

Many elementary schools use standards-based grading instead: 4 exceeds the standard, 3 meets it, 2 is approaching it and 1 is beginning. Put the scale on the card so parents can read the grades without a separate letter; the Grading scale box shows every grade with its range and description.

A report card is a friendly way to judge anything with a series of numbers. The performance card turns each row into a sparkline, averages it and stamps a grade: a sales team graded on its monthly percentage of quota, a set of KPIs, or a TV show graded season by season from its episode ratings.

Each sparkline fits its own data rather than starting at zero, so a season that moves between 7.9 and 8.9 shows its real ups and downs.
