How to Use

  1. 1

    Pick a starter

Start from a budget split or a grouped example such as emissions by region and country. Each one loads a chart you can change.

  2. 2

    Enter your data

Type labels and values in the Data section, paste from a spreadsheet, or connect a Google Sheet. Percentages are worked out from the total for you.

  3. 3

    Edit on the chart

Click any block to rename it, change its value or colour, or delete it. Drag the line between two blocks to move value from one to the other.

  4. 4

    Group the parts

Give items a group and the square splits into a strip per group first, then into the items inside each strip, so both levels read at a glance.

  5. 5

    Choose the look

Blocks sizes each part by area. Grid shows the same shares as 100 small squares, one per percent. Set the gap, corner radius, colours and labels.

  6. 6

    Animate it

Press Animate to watch the square build: blocks grow from the corner, out of their centres, strip by strip or one by one. Pick a speed and loop it.

  7. 7

    Download

Download a free PNG with no watermark. Pro adds HD PNG, vector SVG and an MP4 video of the animation.

What You Can Create

Budget breakdowns

Show where the money goes, with each spending line sized by its share.

Market share

Compare companies or products in one square, grouped by segment.

Emissions and population

Split a world total by region and then by country, like the classic CO₂ square pie.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a square pie chart?

A pie chart drawn as a square. The whole square is 100%, and each part gets a rectangle whose area matches its share, so a part worth 25% covers a quarter of the square. Straight edges make the sizes easier to compare than pie wedges.

How is it different from a pie chart?

Both show parts of a whole. A pie uses angles, which people misjudge; a square pie uses areas in straight-edged blocks, which line up and compare more easily, and long labels fit inside the blocks.

Can a square pie chart show groups?

Yes. Give your items a group, for example regions and the countries in them. The square first splits into one strip per group, then each strip splits into its items, so you see the group totals and the parts in one chart.

Is a square pie chart the same as a waffle chart?

They are related. The Grid look here is the 10 by 10 version, where each small square is 1%, which some people and Excel tutorials call a square pie chart. The Blocks look sizes each part as one rectangle. For a grid built around a single percentage, the Waffle Chart Maker has more grid options.

Is it the same as a treemap?

A treemap packs rectangles to keep them as square as possible and is made for many items. A square pie cuts the square in clean strips in your order, so it reads like a pie chart, with a percentage on every block. For dozens of items, use the Treemap Maker.

Can I make it from a Google Sheet?

Yes. Paste a share link to a sheet with a label column and a value column. The chart fills from the sheet and keeps the colours you picked when the numbers change.

Can I animate a square pie chart?

Yes. Press Animate and the square builds itself: blocks grow from the corner, out of their centres, strip by strip or one by one, and the grid fills square by square. Pro downloads the animation as an MP4 video for slides and social posts.

Is it free?

Yes. Make and download square pie charts as PNG for free with no watermark and no signup. Pro adds HD PNG, SVG and MP4 video.
