How to Use

Paste your sequence
Open Paste or edit data under Data and paste one value per line, in order. Use label, value for a plain sequence, or group, sub, value (2024, Jan, 120) to start a new turn, ring or line whenever the group changes. Tabs from a spreadsheet work too.

Pick a kind
Spiral winds the whole sequence out from the centre, one turn per period. Rings gives each group its own ring with a segment per sub-period, the radial heatmap. Radial line draws each group as a line around the cycle.

Set the period
Use the first column as the period (a year, a month, a season) or wrap every 7, 12, 24 or any number of values: 7 for days of the week, 12 for months, 24 for hours.

When a Radial Chart Beats a Straight Axis
Most data that repeats has a cycle: a year of months, a week of days, a day of hours. On a straight axis, December sits at the far right and January at the far left, even though they are neighbours. Bending the axis into a circle puts them side by side again, and lines up the same point of every cycle along one angle.
That is why radial charts are good at seasonality. On a radial heatmap of monthly sales, every December is in the same spoke of the circle, so you can see at a glance whether the holiday peak is growing. On a spiral, the same idea runs as one continuous sequence, which keeps a long run of data, such as 365 days or a whole TV series, in a compact square.
Radial charts are weaker at exact comparisons: outer rings are longer than inner ones, so the same value covers more area further out. Keep precise comparisons to a colour scale with clear bands, and use a straight chart such as the heatmap maker when the reader needs to compare rows exactly.
Spiral, Rings or Radial Line?
Choose Spiral for one long sequence that you want to read in order: daily values over a year, weekly values over several years, episodes over seasons. Each turn is one period, and the thickness can follow the value as well as the colour.
Choose Rings when each period is a row in its own right, such as a year of months: each ring is one year, which makes the radial heatmap easy to read from the centre out. Choose Radial line when you want to compare the shape of a cycle between a few groups, such as temperatures in four cities, where the lines crossing is the story.
Choosing the Colour Scale
A sequential palette (Blues, Greens, Viridis, Heat) runs from light to dark and suits amounts that only go up from zero, such as sales or steps. A diverging palette (Cool to warm, Spectral) has a neutral middle and suits values above and below a midpoint, such as temperatures around 15 °C or profit around zero; set the midpoint under Colour scale.
Smooth colour shows every small difference; value bands make the chart easier to read at a glance. Bands with meaningful edges work best: 6, 7 and 8 for ratings out of 10, or 5,000 and 10,000 for daily steps. For a phone screen or a video, pick the Story canvas and a Large or Extra large text size so the labels stay readable.

What is a radial chart?
A radial chart places data around a circle instead of along a straight axis. It suits cyclical data, where the end of one period leads into the start of the next: months of the year, days of the week, hours of the day, seasons of a TV show. Values that fall at the same point in each cycle line up along the same angle, so seasonal patterns jump out.
What is a spiral chart?
A spiral chart is a radial chart where the sequence keeps going: it starts at the centre and winds outward, one full turn per period. Each value is a short arc coloured by its size. Because every turn is one period, the same month (or day, or episode number) sits at nearly the same angle on every turn, and a long run of data stays compact.
What is a radial heatmap?
A radial heatmap, or circular heatmap, is a grid bent into a circle: each ring is one row (a year) and each segment around the ring is one column (a month), coloured by value. Choose Rings and paste group, sub, value lines such as 2024, Jan, 120.
How is a radial line chart different from a radar chart?
Both draw values around a circle. A radar chart compares a few different measures on separate axes. A radial line chart plots one measure over a cycle, such as the temperature each month, so the axis around the circle is time. For comparing measures use the /tools/radar-chart-maker.
What data format does it take?
One value per line. Either label, value (Jan 2024, 120) for a single sequence, or group, sub, value (2024, Jan, 120) for grouped data. The first column is the group and the last number on the line is the value, so names that contain commas still work. A first line without a number is read as column names and skipped.
How do I stop spiral gaps lining up into spokes?
This maker already does: every turn starts with a short lead-in that holds the turn label, and the lead-in differs from turn to turn. Turns with the same number of values therefore never put their gaps at the same angles, so the chart reads as one continuous groove instead of a wheel with spokes.
Can I show TV episode ratings on a spiral?
